Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
