Our Premier Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

At first glance, this album could seem more like an arduous scholarly quiz rather than the latest pop project by a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Broken across 4 different parts and voiced in thirteen tongues, it is a dizzying classical-tinged opus investigating feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the perspective of various women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—soars skyward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a long list of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the work of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album manages to escape dry academic posturing feels nearly miraculous, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to blend the past with modern styles, the ambitions feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, the listener still want to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly during the stirring piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The track then segues to the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite know—nor want to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally distinct point from how it began. One moment explores the transient nature of fame with a delicate symphony only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts out moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that the album has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. That trick gets echoed by another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
