Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
